Beyond the Gate, Awaits a Maze

Project statement
At the edge of Rabat’s old medina, Bab El Had marks the entrance to a maze of narrow, winding streets dating back to the 12th century. It’s a dense and vibrant area where traditional crafts and a culture of repair still thrive. Unlike in Norway, where replacing broken items is often the norm, the medina values restoration – here, everything seems to have value.
Inspired by this mindset, the old medina is documented using locally bought and repaired analog cameras. The black and white photographs are a quiet tribute to the medina's resilience, craftsmanship and everyday beauty, seen through the eyes of an outsider.
