From Life to Ashes

By

Project statement

The Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu is one of the most sacred sites in Nepal, and is dedicated to Pashupati – a form of Shiva. Here, families from across the country gather to cremate their loved ones. In Hindu tradition, it is customary to scatter the cremated ashes into the holy Bagmati River as part of the final rites.

Central to these rituals are the cremators, such as Sanju Saptoka. Like many of his colleagues, he has spent many years tending to the fires of Pashupatinath. Despite the challenges they face, including irregular hours and demanding physical work, their role remains vital to the community.
